In Victorian Northwich, the salt industry meant work for some and riches for others, but on the edge of town the workhouse awaited the unwary and the unfortunate. All students meet the Red Lion Innkeeper, Harry, who will show you around this Scheduled Ancient Monument. Discover how salt was produced and the horrific conditions that workers endured, before exploring our gallery space. In the afternoon take part in one of our education sessions. All tours and sessions are tailored to meet the needs of your year group.

Put on your lab coats, goggles and discover the science behind Lion Salt Works. Children will become scientists through a series of hands on mini experiments, exploring how salt was made at the Salt Works. *This session is accompanied by the Harry the Innkeeper Tour.                

KS2 Detectives: Geography

Help us hunt for clues about the Lion Salt Works past. Using aerial photos, modern and historic maps and the Salt Works itself, children will identify and investigate key geographical features within the landscape. *This session is accompanied by the Harry the Innkeeper Tour.            

KS2 Detectives: Local History

Take a step back in time, meet the Editor of the Northwich Times Newspaper and solve a mystery perplexing the local press. Children will become journalists, discovering the impact that the salt industry has had on people, transport and the environment. *This session is accompanied by the Harry the Innkeeper Tour.
