Pre-visit information

A visit to the watermill includes a guided tour where pupils will see wheat being ground into flour, hear and feel the rumble of ancient machinery, help to work a sack hoist and witness the power of the waterwheels.

In addition to your tour, we have a range of hands-on workshops linking to watermill themes and supporting the curriculum. You can choose one of these to add to the tour if you are coming for a half-day visit, or two if you are coming for a whole day.

  • School visits are available from March until the October half-term break.
  • The watermill is a rural site and so coats and sensible shoes will be needed for your visit.
  • We can accommodate up to 30 children for a half day visit, or 45 if you are staying for the whole day.
  • You can have a free pre-visit to help you plan your day, just turn up during our usual opening hours and our millers will be happy to show you around.
  • Costs:  Full-day workshop with a miller (including mill tour, science and history sessions) – £125 per class

Ratios

We recommend that you bring one adult for every seven pupils for Key Stage One and one adult for every ten pupils for Key Stage Two and above.

Lunches

There is a picnic area with tables and benches, or if it’s raining, pupils can sit in the stable block for lunch, though it does get cosy in there!

Special educational needs

Please let us know if there are any children with mobility issues or other SEN so we can tailor our session accordingly.

How to find us

Stretton Watermill is only 10 miles from Chester, off the A534 between Broxton and Farndon.  Turn off at the Cock O’Barton pub and follow the brown tourism signs.  It is located on Mill Lane, but shows as an un-named road on some Sat Nav systems.
